Turning Silence into Play: Reimagining Adolescents’ and Young People’s Sexual and Reproductive Health
Adolescents and young people (AYP) often face criticism—or worse, silence—when they ask about sexual behaviour, relationships, or contraception. In many communities, discussing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) remains taboo, leaving youth to navigate myths, misconceptions, and misinformation on their own.
For young people living in challenging environments, such as Manenberg, where gang violence, unemployment, crime, school dropout, and substance misuse are common, the barriers to accessing accurate information and making informed choices are even greater.
It is in this context that Kom Kuier Saam (“Come Visit Together”) was born.

A Safe, Supportive Space Co-Designed With Youth
Kom Kuier Saam is an innovative intervention co-created with adolescents, young people, and community stakeholders in Manenberg. Its goal is simple but powerful: empower young people to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. The program provides a safe and supportive environment where youth can ask questions freely, share experiences, and strengthen their understanding of contraception, healthy relationships, and HIV prevention.
To increase engagement and overcome barriers of stigma and discomfort, Kom Kuier Saam uses a gamified, youth-centered approach. Learning is embedded in play through storytelling that makes information relatable, levels and challenges that motivate participation, and rewards that reinforce positive choices. This method not only makes sexual health education more accessible and memorable but also actively shifts attitudes toward SRH topics.
Building on the success of the in-person program, the team is developing a web-based game. This game empowers players with accurate information, practical decision-making skills, and the confidence to navigate their SRH journeys—anytime, anywhere. Gamification ensures knowledge is retained, engagement is sustained, and positive behaviours are encouraged.
Changing the Game for HIV Prevention
Kom Kuier Saam demonstrates that when young people are co-creators of solutions, interventions become more effective, relevant, and sustainable. Gamified learning improves knowledge retention, fosters positive attitudes toward sexual health, and encourages lasting behavioural change. This approach offers a new model for HIV prevention—one that resonates deeply with youth and gives them the tools and confidence to make informed choices.
