SSLN | Link & Learn on Integrating Mental Health for Key Populations hosted by Zimbabwe

No items found.
Introduction

Prioritizing mental health for key populations (KPs) is crucial in public health efforts, necessitating the provision of services that are both specialized and inclusive. KPs have historically borne a greater burden of mental health issues, exacerbated by stigma, discrimination as well as social and cultural barriers. This underscores the importance of dismantling these barriers to enable access to mental health care tailored to the specific needs of KPs. Collaborative efforts between local governments non-governmental organisations, and healthcare providers are critical in efficiently directing resources towards innovative solutions that address the unique mental health needs of KPs.

Objectives
  • Highlight the critical need for mental health services as a core component of overall well-being.
  • Explore the Friendship Bench model as an effective strategy to address common mental health disorders.
  • Explore the adaptation of the Friendship Bench model by the Centre for Sexual Health and HIV AIDS Research Zimbabwe (CeSHHAR) for KPs.
Proceedings

The session, facilitated by Humphery Ndondo from NAC Zimbabwe, began with his reflections on his time as an occupational therapist and the general overlook of mental health issues within African communities. Bernice Chawira from Friendship Bench shared insights into the Friendship Bench and its innovative strategy to address the lack of mental health professionals in Zimbabwe through training grandmothers to provide problem-solving therapy on park benches. Sithembile Musemburi and Matilda Mawere from CeSHHAR discussed how their organization has incorporated the Friendship Bench model within KP-focused programs. Their presentation covered both the triumphs and hurdles encountered, providing valuable lessons for participating nations: Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, and Mozambique.
